Oliver Pooley


Oliver Pooley is a freelance percussionist and drummer, living in London, but in demand around the country. He has performed with some of the country's leading professional ensembles at many of the most iconic concert halls, including at the Royal Albert Hall for the BBC Proms.

Educated at Chetham's School of Music and the Royal Academy of Music, he has built up a wide knowledge of a broad array of repertoire and disciplines. He has given concerto performances at the Royal Northern College of Music and Chester Cathedral, and recitals at Leeds College of Music and the Saddleworth Festival, amongst others. Through Chetham's and the Academy, he has had the chance to perform alongside the London Sinfonietta at the Royal Festival Hall, the Halle Orchestra at the Bridgewater Hall, and Gabrieli Consort at a premiere performance and recording in Poland. As well as this, he has played as section principal with the numerous ensembles at both establishments, and a variety of semi-professional and professional ensembles as a freelance musician, including the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra, with whom he is currently on trial for the position of Principal Percussion & Timpani..

Having a keen passion for music outside the orchestral "mainstream," he has also performed as part of a number of authentic period ensembles, chamber ensembles, and contemporary ensembles. He is the percussionist in the contemporary music group "Ensemble x.y," a new ensemble comprising players past and present from the Royal Academy of Music, which will give its first concerts in 2015.

Oliver is also in demand as a pop/session player, with training and extensive experience in all genres, playing drum kit and percussion. He frequently performs with the Academy's Musical Theatre Orchestra, and has played in many professional and semi-professional productions around London and the UK.

Coupled with his time at Chetham's and the Academy, his training includes the National Youth Orchestra, the London Symphony Orchestra St Luke's Academy, the Dartington Summer School and the Britten-Pears Young Artist Scheme. Oliver is currently in his 4th and final year at the Academy, where he studies primarily with Neil Percy (London Symphony Orchestra) and William Lockhart (English National Opera), amongst others.

Oliver holds two diplomas. The first is in Music Theory (AMusTCL), awarded by the Trinity College of Music, in which he acheived a Merit. The second is a Licentiate of the Royal Schools of Music for performance, in which he achieved a Distinction.
